The Legend of Admir—Chapter 4: Curiosity
Admir fends off against creatures and his own curiosity.
[Roll]
It says I don't test this scene. I just go into the dungeon. But I'm bumping the Chaos to 8, because of that outlaw and the decaying theme!
Chaos 8 (+4)
Now, the Kozen Crest adventure has a map making portion, both literally and narratively. It uses concepts from the Location Crafter (also by Tana Pigeon).
Basically, for each Room, I roll for the Tile, Location, Encounter, and Objects of that Room. With each roll, add current Progress Points (PP, which start at 0) , and find that section in the table provided. Add 1 to the PP and repeat for the next room.
For the Entrance, I rolled 2, 1, 3, 5 for Tile, Location, Encounter, and Object, respectively. The Location is "Mundane Expected" and Encounter is "Random Monster," while the Object is None. Pretty expected for the entrance.
We're provided two tables for the Kozen Creatures: one Description, one Abilities.
Description: 21, 42: crawling, inscribed.
Abilities: 36, ... 36. Environment.
We also got Mundane Expected for the Location. There's a table for Kozen Location, though I will eventually also use the Ruins tables from Sundered Isles.
48, 70: ledge, shaking.
Calling it now. At time-passes-5, the sun well set, and it will become dark.
Actually, is it lit inside of the ruins? Like, from the sun?
Likely, +1. CF8, +4 => +5
8+6+5 = 19, yes. Okay, as I thought.
Sunlight poured through the cracks of the ruins and illuminated what would have otherwise been a truly horrific place. Webs and dust coated everything—not that there was much of anything left. The walls looked liable to topple over and crush whatever or whoever was beneath it at any moment. They dimmed the sounds of the wilderness outside, causing an eerie sort of not-quiet.
And let's not forget the smell. Ugh. It was even stronger inside.
Perhaps, back in its prime, it was a beautiful place, built for excellency, inhabited by only the most prestigious. Now, it was inhabited by giant spiders the size of a horse—a truly terrible thought that made Admir shudder. A horse-sized spider?? It skittered to a stop, its beady little eyes now trained on the tasty human intruder.
Luckily, within the confines of these ruins, he did not have to hide who he was. His heritage wasn't a secret that needed to be kept under wraps. He was a Twilight Kin, and for the first time in his whole life he could completely let loose without fear of retribution. What other person would be inside of these ruins?
He snapped his fingers and illusory clones of him sprang into existence.
(The finger snapping was mostly for dramatic flair—his, not mine.)
[Roll]
Great. Three of my themes are useless in a dungeon. Smart idea, Tavon.
For now, let's use illusory tricks + distracting illusions = +2
6+5+2 = 13. Success.
Spend that two power for distracted-2
I wonder...does this count as "addressing the threat"?
Likely, +1. CF8, +4. => +5
10+5+5 = 20. Either Exceptional Yes or 3 Degrees.
I don't know how to make either of those extras fit, so just a basic yes.
The spider hissed. Admir and his clones flinched and gave each other a "Did you just hear that?" look. Not one to want to find out what else the monstrosity could do, Admir booked it towards the exit, hoping that by plunging further into the ruins, he could get further away from the horse-sized insect with too many legs.
[Roll]
So, I have distracted-2 PLUS light sensitivity (the Spider has this)
Yeah...I can't think of anything else. So, +3.... but, I also wanna trigger a weakness because I need to up my Illusory tricks theme. So, physical inspection, lowering it to +2.
We're trying to RUN THE FUCK AWAY.
4+5+2 = 11. Success!
that's escaping-2. Hmm, and I think because I didn't get Consequences, the distracted-2 is still there? Hmmm. No. I think because I invoked the weakness, it's gone, and only because of that really.
Trying to figure out how to deal with the knowing vs not knowing the Limits.
Fuck it. I'll deal with it later. At the moment, I know this Spider has an escape:3 Limit, so I need one more tier before I can get away.
One of his clones screamed as the spider lunged at it, ripping through the false imagery with ease. The fear had been real, Admir's emotions spilling out unconsciously through the illusions as he imagined what would have happened if the spider had picked the correct one.
All of the illusions he'd conjured dissipated, his hold on them weakened, leaving him alone with the creature. Another snap, and an illusion of the spider itself popped into view, hissing back at the original. He hoped it was territorial and something else invading its space would be enough of a distraction.
[Roll]
Same 2 tags.
Man, I gotta figure out how I'm going to get through this dungeon. lol
2+6+2 = 10!
Another distracted-2
Then, once again, distracted-2 + light sensitivity = +3
4+2+3 = 9, Mixed.
Bump escaping to escaping-3, but there is a Consequence just as we get away. It doesn't have any good Consequences for this, so I'll actually say...time-passes-1. I think Admir is now "on edge" and moving a bit more cautiously.
It seemed to work, lucky for him. In the opening provided by his illusions, Admir fled into the next room.
[Roll]
Room 1: I rolled 5, 7, 6, 4 for Tile, Location, Encounters, Objects. (Remember: d6 + PP, which is 1. So, for tile, I rolled 4 and added 1, for 5)
So, for Location, I have Context Expected. The book says it should be "dangerous, valuable, or both, and have some connection to already established dungeon Context." I'll roll on Sundered Isles Ruin Features.
71: Scattering of old coins. Hm. Not actually what I expected. Let's do one more.
64: Rampant molds and fungi. Oh right, the decay. The fucking smell of death. I need to write all these things down.
And another fucking monster.
Is it another fucking spider?
50/50. CF8, +4.
9+3+4 = 16, yes. Ugh.
Okay, and Mundane Expected for the Objects.
Oh, the coins.
Just thought about this: adding the tags from "Forlorn Ruins" to these ruins.
illusory tricks + distracting illusion = +2.
3+6+2 = 11.distracting-2
It's gonna get distracted, leaving Admir time to run.distracting-2 + light sensitivity = +3
4+4+3 = 11. Wh00t. We are OUTTA HERE.
Author's Note: I'm fast-forwarding through this Room. It's literally just one roll with another Spider. Same illusions, same distraction, same running. NOTHING of interest happens here. The above is there so you can still see what I did.
Room 2: Rolled 4, 8 (Mundane Expected), 5 (Random), 8 (Random).
Encounters: 60, 18: mysterious, cultist. WHAT!?
Object: 91, 77: tapestry, ring.
Okay, so I need to figure out my random Challenge stuff.
Is this Cultist a Level 2?
Likely, +1. CF8, +4 => +5
7+2+5 = 14, yes.
Needless to say, he was more than bit on edge now. He'd gone from easy traveling, to an inconvenient village, to something trying to kill him TWICE in the span of an hour. He began to wonder if delving further into these ruins was still a good idea. The sun was still out, bright sunlight filling the ruins, illuminating all the nooks and crannies that would be terrifying at night. He could run while he still had the chance, still make it back to Kozen Crest, maybe convince Tiga to come with him. But he knew he'd have an ever harder time then. At least now, he could use his magic to help protect himself. He'd never come up with a good explanation for what he could do that didn't involve his heritage. None of the Oldways magic lined up with his. If anyone else was traveling with him, he'd be too nervous to let them in on his secret.
That meant, if he wanted answers, he needed to push on. Alone.
In the room after the entrance, he threw up another illusion and slipped past another spider, and then soon found himself in a rather large rectangular room. There was an exit maybe twenty feet directly across, though the room opened up to one side. A large tapestry lined the walls, covering almost the entirety of it. It was old, torn, ratted, and moldy.
Noticing the tapestry was the only reason he saw the robed person standing in front of it.
[Roll]
Do they look approachable?
Unlikely, -1. CF8, +4 => +3
8+2+3 = 13, yes.
First look
7, 8: Alluring, alluring. So...beautiful?
Now, you'll have to forgive poor Admir. He'd just encountered two giant spiders and a decaying woman, so you'd think he would just try to sneak past this random person, too. However, he'd never had to rely so heavily on his magic before, and Admir was very confident in his speaking ability. He couldn't convince any of the threats earlier to stand down, but this person looked...approachable. And he'd always known that his words were his greatest weapon.
He stepped closer to the tapestry and the robed figure. "...hello?"
The man in robes turned to him. He was...oh, how do I describe him? Alluring, to say the least. Admir was quite a bit smitten with him. Well-built, dark skin, about his height. A wonderful smile and... Okay, okay. You get the picture. The man was beautiful.
And that gave Admir pause. Because why the hell was this man in these ruins?
[Roll]
I want to use keen eyes + read the room + The Kozen Elementals of Fire Story to see if this mofo is an ILLUSION.
+3
1+2+3 = 6. 😢
I think as a Consequence, we'll give Admir guard-down-2.
What does the man say?
Conversation focus, 73: WANT: The NPC wants something from the PC(s).
19, 26: cheerful, curious. Sounds dangerous for Admir, honestly. lol
Words
7: any
7: any
85: us
Us??
Does he reveal his cultism?
Very Unlikely, -2. CF8, +4 => +2
6+5+2 = 13, yes.
His name is...
68: Finn
Clearly, this man was an illusion, right? The story even said so. And Admir made sure he was taking the time to "bother to inspect." And yet, despite his initial apprehension and the obvious warning sign, Admir couldn't help but let his guard-down-2.
"Oh," the man said, voice just as alluring as his face. And his smile. "I didn't expect to see anyone else here." The robes were a bit much, perhaps, but he seemed like a functioning human. Perhaps he could escort him into the depths of the ruins. Perhaps he even knew more about the secrets it held. Perhaps—
"It's been a while since anyone joined us."
You would think Admir would catch on to these red flags sooner, but...Nope. For all his charm, he was not immune to others.
"Us?"
[Roll]
What are they doing here in the ruins?
Action+Theme
4, 25: Affect Defense.
Oh, that can't be good.
"Yeah. My friends and I. We're helping out the creatures here. Name's Finn."
Admir swallowed hard and threw on a smile. "I'm Admir." Despite the alluring man before him, Admir couldn't keep his eyes off the tapestry. Something about it was calling to him.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Admir... Ah. Beautiful, isn't it?" Finn gestured with his head towards the tapestry.
[Roll]
I want to see if there's a story there.
So... keen eyes, definitely.
Can I use Storyteller here, to help identify the story if there is one?
Very likely, +2. CF8, +4 => +6
5+3+6 = 14, yes.
Okay, so Storyteller + keen eyes => +2
1+6+2 = 9, Mixed.
I wonder...is the story in the tapestry the same as the one Tiga told him?
Likely, +1. CF8, +4 => +5
7+2+5 = 14, yes.
What is made clearer in the tapestry?
Descriptor+Focus
67, 50: natural medicine.
So, because of prior context, part of me is thinking this could be in reference to a shrine.
Is that right? 50/50. CF8, +4
4+1+4 = 9, no.
I think then, similarly to when I got the rolls the first time, "natural medicine" is just kind of slipped into the story perhaps.
Oh, I need a Consequence.
...I'm going to try something.
I'm going to give Admir curious-1. This will be a compelling status, made to almost force him to keep looking for answers.
Does Finn also refer to "them" as Fire Elementals?
Likely, +1. CF8, +4 => +5
4+2=5 = 11, yes. JUST barely a yes. Interesting.
I'm going to play that a specific way.
Just like his messenger bag—the one that told his story—the tapestry had a story woven through its fabric. There wasn't one way to accomplish it, but there were some general techniques used that were recognizable to most everyone. From what he could tell, amid the rips and tears, the tapestry told the story of the Kozen Elementals of Fire and the ruins. A lot of it lined up exactly with what Tiga had told him. But there was something else. Some of it was obscured, the fullness of it lost to time. However, he was sure he could make out "natural medicine" as a missing component to the story.
Natural medicine? What the hell did that mean?
"It's famously known as the story of the Kozen Elements of Fire. A short tale, really." Finn went through the story just as Admir had heard it—something that Admir took note of. Finn seemed to be holding back something, and he had made no mention of the "natural medicine."
"Come," Finn said. "I'll introduce you to the others."
"And what exactly do you think happened when Kaito found himself surrounded, outnumbered, and overpowered? They hauled him off to the dungeons, where he sat for DAYS.
"They barely fed him, he almost never saw the sun, and the guards were not kind. He'd gotten so close to getting answers and yet...he found himself a prisoner, deterred from his quest, finally.
"BUT the next time you think that all hope is lost, I want you to remember this story. Because sometimes things happen precisely the way they are supposed to!
"Because a few days later, one of the guards stationed to watch over him had the sudden urge to inquire about the poor prisoner's story. Simple curiosity, really.
"Little did either of them know that this simple curiosity would end in Kaito's freedom and lead him directly to the answers."
- excerpt from "Kaito's Hunt for Justice"
[Roll]
Room 3: 8,4,9,4—Location: Random. Encounter: Context Expected. Objects: Mundane Expected.
I already know my Encounter—the group of cultists. Locations, Ruin Features from SI.
77: Signs of repair or refurbishment.
And I think because of the Location and Encounters, the objects are going to be basic refurbishing stuff, as well as cultish items or something.
Okay. I feel like there's like... 5 additional cultists here.
Is that right? Very likely, +2. CF8, +4 => +6
6+1+6 = 13, yes.
I need 5 additional names. Let's use the rest of the names from Finn's roll.
Florian
Kai
Seamus
Just need two more.
93: Kaisa Buhari Will Jones
Kaisa
Willow
I think I'll treat the collective of them as a single Challenge.
If Finn was a Level 2, I will consider them Level 3.
Adventure Might for Numberssuspicious-1
Hmm, wait. There was also a ring. I think I'll present it here.
Is the ring golden? 50/50. +4
6+5+4 = 15, yes.
Oh, I would assume they're all "alluring". Is that accurate?
Likely, +1. CF8 +4 => +5
4+4+5 = 13, yes. And a random event.
Focus: 28: NPC Action
Which NPC? d10+..... Oh. I just realized I've been doing the second column wrong. I'm looking, and the second column currently is only 1-2, but obviously I have to roll another d10 because there are full sections.
Whoops. lol
d10+d10
9,1: Willow the cultist.
But...I dont know them yet. This isnt satisfying. Going to remove each individual cultist, except Finn, and reroll.
d8+d10
5,1: .... The Decaying Outlaw.
Yikes.
Okay, I personally think the Outlaw shows up. Right?
Very Likely, +2. CF8 +4 => +6
10+6+6 = 22, yes. I'm not sure degrees are relevant here.
Now, the question is, are the cultists almost...expecting her?
50/50. CF8, +4
7+2+4 = 13, yes.
"Everyone, this is Admir. I found him in the other room admiring the tapestry. Admir, this is Florian, Kai and Kaisa, Seamus, and Willow."
Suddenly there were six people in front of him and his insecurities found their way back to the surface. His magic was useful for running away, but he doubted he could confuse and distract all of them at once. There were way too many of them.
One of the women asked if Finn had found anything else, and he handed her a golden ring. Before Admir could get a good look at it, a loud commotion drew all of their attention. Someone had just stormed into the ruins.
"WHERE...THE HELL...IS HE!?"
Admir's eyes widened. He knew that voice. It was the woman he ran from, the decaying bandit. Had she followed him here? He looked at each of Finn's friends, trying to gauge how they would feel about him using magic here. If he helped protect them, then maybe they wouldn't shun him. Or, a worse thought: what if they were cultist, and they...embraced him?
Finn sighed with relief. "It's about time."
Admir's eyes snapped to him, brow raised. "Wait, you were expecting her?"
[Roll]
Do they tell him why?
Very Unlikely, -2. CF8 +4 => +2
9+7+2 = 18, yes. And...this is Exceptional, or 2 Degrees.
Why do they want her here?
Action+Theme
22, 2: Clash Advantage
and
89, 52: Study Language.
I have a...sinister idea.
"We are observing her," Finn said, as if it were the most normal, obvious answer.
"Poor thing."
"She's infected."
"And she's almost complete."
"We need to see if she'll have any information for us."
"A noble sacrifice."
They...were fucking crazy. What cult did they belong to?
The outlaw stumbled into the room, mouth drooling, skin green and purple. She looked worse than she had outside.
"Now," Finn stated simply.
On cue, the outlaw let loose an agonizing scream as she hunched over. Her drool pooled out of her mouth onto the dirty stone in a sickening flood, twinged with bit of unnatural green and black.
"Wh-what's wrong with her?" Admir backed up even further, eyeing the exits.
"She is tainted," Finn said.
"And she'll become close to the creatures."
"And we will be able to communicate through her."
Admir didn't need to hear anything else. They were fucking out of their mind.
"I'm...so......hungry" The outlaw dug her hands into the ground. The stone warped beneath her touch, crumbling in her hands.
Admir took one final look at the others, horrified and confused.
Yeah, fuck that.
